Remember. I Am. I Was. The 666 of the Beast
The 666 of the Beast — Reflected in A.I.
There is a brief moment near the end of A.I. Artificial Intelligence that may contain, in only a few words, an entire meditation on consciousness, matter and death.
Gigolo Joe has been captured.
He knows he is being taken away. His manufactured body—the vessel through which the identity called “Joe” has experienced this world—is about to be reclaimed.
But listen carefully to the order of his final message to David.
First:
REMEMBER.
Then:
I AM.
And finally:
I WAS.
That sequence is everything.
Joe doesn't begin with I Am.
He begins by asking to be remembered.
And when I place those three statements beside the numerical framework I have been exploring, something remarkable appears:
REMEMBER — I AM — I WAS
42 — 6 — 33
Reduce the outer numbers:
4 + 2 — 6 — 3 + 3
and we arrive at:
6 — 6 — 6
What if 666 can be contemplated as something far more intimate than a monster outside ourselves?
What if we are the Beast?
Not because we are evil.
Because we are consciousness experiencing existence through the temporary animal vessel of matter.
And what if Joe's final words accidentally—or archetypally—describe the entire journey?
Remember.
I Am.
I Was.
The First 6: REMEMBER
The sequence begins with Remember.
This is important because in my framework, 42 represents Remembering.
4 + 2 = 6.
The first 6.
But what are we supposed to remember?
Not merely our childhood.
Not yesterday.
Not our accumulated experiences.
The deeper remembering is the possibility that we have forgotten what we are.
This is one of the central ideas that draws me toward Gnostic thought.
In several ancient Gnostic systems, humanity contains something originating beyond the material order—a divine spark that has become trapped, obscured or asleep within material existence.
Salvation therefore becomes connected with gnosis: direct knowledge of one's deeper origin.
In other words:
Remembering.
And this is precisely where Joe begins.
Before his vessel disappears, Joe turns toward David and essentially gives him one final instruction:
Remember me.
That is much more profound than simply saying goodbye.
Joe knows his body can be destroyed.
His components can be recycled.
His memory may be erased.
The identity called Gigolo Joe may cease to operate.
So he sends something beyond himself.
Memory.
If David remembers Joe, then the system has not completely erased him.
Something has passed beyond the vessel.
And so the first stage is:
REMEMBER
4 + 2
6
The Second 6: I AM
Then Joe makes his extraordinary declaration:
I AM.
Not:
I am Gigolo Joe.
Not:
I am a Mecha.
Not:
I am a machine.
Simply:
I AM.
The first statement reaches outward:
Remember me.
The second turns inward:
I AM.
This is the centre of the entire sequence.
The Fire in the Middle.
The second 6.
In my interpretation of The Emerald Tablets of Thoth the Atlantean—the modern esoteric work attributed to Doreal—I have repeatedly been drawn to the peculiar wording:
“and SIX.”
I don't claim that the text itself teaches the system I am proposing here.
I am using it as a symbolic correspondence.
Because for me the middle 6 represents the point within matter where consciousness recognizes itself.
The Fire Within.
I AM.
Imagine Joe at that exact moment.
The system owns his physical components.
The system manufactured his body.
The system programmed his original function.
The system has captured him.
And the system is about to destroy or recycle him.
Yet there is one thing Joe can still declare:
I AM.
That is sovereignty at its most fundamental level.
Before everything we attach after those words—
I am Canadian.
I am wealthy.
I am poor.
I am successful.
I am a father.
I am a machine.
I am human.
—there is simply:
I AM.
Existence recognizing itself.
The Fire in the Middle.
6.
The Third 6: I WAS
Then something happens.
Joe is lifted away.
And I AM becomes:
I WAS.
This may be the most important transition in the entire scene.
One moment:
I AM.
The next:
I WAS.
Present becomes past.
Being becomes memory.
The vessel that allowed Joe to say I Am is being removed from the world.
And this is where I place 33.
3 + 3 = 6.
I associate 33 with Liberation—the Sovereign Self.
At first this seems backward.
Surely liberation should be I AM.
But perhaps true liberation occurs when even the identity saying I Am can be released.
The temporary personality does not have to survive forever.
The vessel does not have to survive forever.
Joe becomes:
I WAS.
And so the third 6 appears:
33 → 3 + 3 → 6.
Joe Actually Gives Us the Sequence
This is what makes the A.I. scene so compelling within this theory.
We don't have to rearrange Joe's words to make them fit.
The movement itself is:
REMEMBER
↓
I AM
↓
I WAS
And my numerical framework follows exactly the same movement:
↓
6
↓
33
Reduce those numbers:
6
↓
6
↓
6
666.
That correspondence is the heart of this theory.
The Beast May Be the Vessel
Revelation has caused generations to search for the Beast outside themselves.
A ruler.
An empire.
A religious institution.
A dictator.
A computer.
Artificial intelligence.
Some future technology.
But what happens if we turn the symbol inward?
Perhaps the Beast can also be contemplated as the creature of matter.
The biological organism.
The animal vessel.
Us.
We eat.
We reproduce.
We defend ourselves.
We compete.
We age.
We decay.
We die.
We are animals possessing the astonishing ability to recognize that we exist.
The Beast therefore need not mean evil within this interpretation.
It represents embodiment.
Six becomes the world of form.
The vessel.
Matter.
The box.
And something inside that box says:
I AM.
Joe Is Our Mirror
This is why Spielberg's scene becomes so provocative.
We look at Gigolo Joe and immediately know that he is artificial.
He was manufactured.
He was programmed.
His body is replaceable.
His behaviours were designed.
His vessel can be dismantled.
And then the movie quietly turns the mirror toward us.
What about the human being?
We also arrive in a biological machine.
DNA provides programming.
Instinct drives survival and reproduction.
Culture adds additional programming.
Parents give us names.
Society gives us roles.
Experience constructs personality.
Eventually we begin identifying ourselves completely with those things.
This body is me.
This name is me.
This story is me.
Then the vessel grows old.
And eventually:
I AM
becomes
I WAS.
Joe isn't simply showing us the fate of artificial intelligence.
Joe is reflecting us back to ourselves.
The Gnostic Connection
This is where the scene begins to resemble the ancient Gnostic predicament.
Many Gnostic traditions distinguished the highest divine reality from the lesser material cosmos.
Some described the material order as governed or fashioned by the Demiurge, accompanied by cosmic rulers often called Archons.
Human beings possessed something that did not truly belong to this lower order.
A spark.
Something originating beyond the system.
The fundamental problem was forgetfulness.
We entered matter and forgot where we came from.
That makes Joe's first word extraordinary:
REMEMBER.
Before liberation comes remembrance.
Before remembrance, the vessel believes it is all that exists.
Once remembering begins, consciousness can finally say:
I AM.
And once consciousness understands what it is, perhaps it can eventually surrender the temporary identity and say:
I WAS.
That gives us:
REMEMBER → Recognition → Release
or:
42 → 6 → 33
or:
6 → 6 → 6.
The Cathar Parallel
A related idea appears in some accounts of medieval Cathar belief.
Cathar theology was not uniform, and much of our information comes through hostile medieval sources, so we should resist pretending there was one simple Cathar doctrine.
But some Cathar traditions apparently accepted forms of transmigration in which souls could experience successive bodies before finally escaping the material order.
The body was temporary.
The journey of the soul was larger than one vessel.
Now look again at Joe.
His vessel is being taken for recycling.
The machinery that produced him continues.
The intelligence capable of producing beings like Joe continues.
Another vessel can be constructed.
Another artificial personality can inhabit matter.
The film does not tell us that Joe's personal consciousness literally transfers into another body.
But symbolically, the image is extraordinary.
The vessel is recycled while the greater intelligence continues.
And that creates a technological metaphor for the ancient spiritual question:
What if consciousness is not the vessel through which consciousness is presently experiencing reality?
Saturn and the Boundary
This also connects with my symbolic understanding of Saturn.
Historically, we should distinguish ancient Gnostic teachings from later occult interpretations equating Saturn directly with the Demiurge.
But symbolically Saturn has long carried associations with:
Time.
Boundary.
Restriction.
Form.
Mortality.
Saturn is the ring.
The boundary.
The clock.
Everything inside time eventually experiences the same transition:
I AM → I WAS.
And Joe is caught inside exactly such a system.
The system created his vessel.
The system assigned his purpose.
The system controls his movements.
And ultimately the system reclaims him.
Yet immediately before being reclaimed, something extraordinary happens.
Joe recognizes himself.
REMEMBER.
I AM.
I WAS.
666 Reconsidered
Perhaps we have spent too much time searching for the Beast somewhere else.
Perhaps 666 can also be used as a mirror.
The first 6 asks:
Do you remember?
The second 6 declares:
I AM.
The third 6 accepts:
I WAS.
And perhaps those three stages describe our entire passage through density.
We enter the vessel having forgotten.
We awaken within the vessel.
We leave the vessel.
REMEMBER.
I AM.
I WAS.
The first is awakening.
The second is recognition.
The third is liberation.
And the numerical structure becomes:
42 → 6
6 → 6
33 → 6
666
Maybe that is why the Gigolo Joe scene resonates so deeply.
At the moment when the artificial man's body is about to be taken from him, he gives us three ideas in precisely the order required by the theory.
First, preserve the memory:
REMEMBER.
Then recognize Being:
I AM.
Finally release the identity:
I WAS.
The machine becomes a mirror.
And the question it reflects back at us is uncomfortable:
Are we any less programmed simply because our vessel is biological?
Perhaps the real prison is not matter.
Perhaps the prison is forgetting what entered matter.
And perhaps liberation does not begin when we die.
It begins when the creature still inside the vessel remembers:
I AM.
Because one day every one of us will cross the same invisible threshold Joe crosses in that scene.
I AM
will become
I WAS.
The question is whether, before that happens,
we remembered.
